Buttha Shudi is a yogic practice to purify the elements. All matter, living and nonliving, contains all five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether (akasha). Below are recommendations for purifying each element. With these practices, we are more likely to stay free from sickness and disease. Try to make them a daily habit for better health and happiness!

Earth Element

  • Get out in nature
  • Walk barefoot on the earth, touch the ground with your hands
  • Express gratitude to the earth daily
  • Eat only whole foods

Water Element

  • Drink 8 to 16 cups of water daily
  • Have warm water with lemon or lime each morning before eating
  • Take a bath
  • Go for a swim

Fire Element

  • Get sunshine every day
  • Practice gratitude for the sun with sun salutations
  • Exercise and sweat daily
  • Stand near a fire

Air Element

  • Spend time in fresh air daily
  • Practice pranayama breathing techniques – Pranayama
  • Keep a window slightly open while sleeping

Space (Ether) Element

  • Practice savasana daily (Final pose in most yoga classes)
  • Do Yoga Nidra as part of savasana – Insight Timer App
  • Meditate, especially on chakras
